In 1977 Pacita moved to New York City, where she lived in a one room studio on 23rd Street, right next to the Chelsea Hotel.
She immediately enrolled in the Art Students League of New York and studied figurative and still life drawing, and painting under John Helicker and Robert Beverly Hale.
Her professors were always amazed at how different her still life paintings were from her classmates, as hers were always full of bright colors. Pacita worked hard to improve her figurative drawing skills and spent many late nights sketching nude models at the school.
