During the last year of her life, while undergoing daily radiotherapy for her cancer, Pacita completed a massive project of painting the Alkaff Bridge over Singapore River with 55 different colors and over 2,300 circles. The project was completed in seven weeks and was inaugurated in late January 2004.

In her own words:

I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to transform the Alkaff Bridge into a new colorful outdoor sculpture, that I call the "Painted Bridge". My hope is that when people look at the fifty-five colors and playful circle designs adorning the Bridge, they will smile and enjoy experiencing art as a part of their daily life. The "Painted Bridge" is my gift to the people of Singapore !

I believe that art should be for everyone, and that is why I am so happy that each day thousands of Singaporeans and international tourists pass over, by, and under the Bridge by foot, bicycle, car, bus and boat. It delights me that many people have been attracted and enchanted by the Bridge's colorful design. I am even more pleased by the number of people that have brought their families down to Robertson Quay just to take a look at the "Painted Bridge". For me, it is very rewarding just to see the happy smiles on the children's faces as they cross over the "Painted Bridge".

Since the completion of the "Painted Bridge", many people from all walks of life, and all parts of the city, have recognized me as the "Bridge Lady" and thanked me for my artistic gift to Singapore. While it has been nice to receive congratulations from government officials, businessmen and other artists, it has been much more rewarding to hear the "Painted Bridge" praised by taxi drivers, hospital workers, shopkeepers and especially the children.

It is when I receive such comments, that I know that my gift to Singapore is appreciated by the community, and I wish that the "Painted Bridge" will inspire more community art projects like it in the future.

I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the "Painted Bridge", as much as I enjoyed creating it for the people of Singapore.
